HOW TECHNOLOGY WILL HELP OUR CLASSROOM

Dear Parents:
Welcome to our Technology Fundraising Blog!! It is a pleasure to be able to provide this resource to ensure that you receive all the pertinent information relating to our fundraising efforts for additional technology in our classroom. Please feel free to utilize this blog as often as possible. The success of this fundraising effort depends on your involvement!

I would like to start off by addressing the legitimate concerns that many of you have about increasing technology in our classroom. I can assure you that the use of any technology in our classroom will be used solely for educational purposes. Please blog me if you have additional concerns.

My approach to teaching stresses both direct teaching methods such as Atkinson-Shiffrin's information processing theory, and constructivist theories such as Lev Vygotsky's zone of proximal development (ZPD) as well as scaffolding theory. Using directed teaching theories, I will focus on information processing by incorporating the use of computers. It is apparent that "computer applications have qualities to attract students' attention and provide repetitive application and practice on an individual basis" (Robyler & Doering, 2010, p. 36), thereby reinforcing that information into long term memory. Computers will serve as research and reference terminals for social studies assignments to aid students, software to use with these computers for math and language arts, as well as helping to explore the world of science through technology. Having the capability to use multimedia projectors to demonstrate and guide students as a class using PowerPoint technology will allow me to teach to the group. I will also challenge my students individually by stretching their cognitive abilities and assisting them to complete tasks just out of their reach (ZPD) by presenting "visual technology tools, from video based scenarios to virtual reality" (Robyler & Doering, 2010, p. 40), and helping to scaffold (build upon) their understanding of all material presented to them. Students will be working in cooperative groups on many projects this year from e-pals, the email version of pen pals, to recreating the routes of our early explorers. Having available digital equipment to help facilitate these projects and the opportunity to keep visual records of my students' individual progress will be beneficial to the class as a whole.

We are getting ready to embark on an unbelievable learning experience. Let's work together to make this year exciting and challenging! Please help support our goal of raising funds to support technology in our school.

I look forward to meeting and talking with all of you in the near future.

Thank You,
Felece Vertrees
